The General Setting

The sandbox takes place in a series of locations, which are connected by a bullet train. Each locations is referred to as a "ward," and NPC talk about them as if they were other sections of the City of Sand. However each ward is vastly different from one another, to the point that they sometimes seem like entirely new countries or worlds.

Characters wake up in the Daffodil Ward, which is a generic city resembling Tokyo. The bullet train that connects the wards is on a circular track, which surrounds the perimeter of the  Daffodil Ward. Beyond the train is a fog so thick that it cannot be seen through. Attempts to walk through the fog and to another Ward by foot will result in the character getting lost and walking back into Daffodil Ward. That is to say: The train is the only way to travel between locations.

Fortunately, every Ward is eager to accept new residents. There is housing available, jobs to take, and plenty of things to do. The locals are very friendly to foreigners and happy to show them around. Any questions they may have upon arrival will be quickly answered by a helpful native. Strangely, the locals cannot board the train themselves.

Characters arrive by train. Typically, they'll be in a dreamlike state until the moment that they set foot off the train. Most characters are deposited in Daffodil City, but it is possible to wake up in one of the other wards if the player so chooses.

Housing / Employment

Players can assume just about any housing situation for their characters. Even though no one arrives with currency, it is very easy to get a home in any of the wards. The native population is practically begging the new arrivals to live here. They will give free rooms to anyone who asks and will offer it to anyone who looks interested. They will even vacate their own family home and give it away without question.

The native population is borderline hostile in how ready they are to give-up their homes, too: They might shove the keys and the deed in your characters' hand and then speed away on a motorbike, never to seen again... and all your character would have to do to initiate this reaction is stare at the house in question.

Likewise, the natives are very eager to hire the newcomers. They will give up management of their family run business if a character voices too much interest. They will even go out of their way to help newcomers set-up their own businesses. NPCs are available for hire as well, though you may have to force them to take their paychecks home.

The City of Sand is very happy to have you here. Maybe even too happy.
